Unexpected starter helped spark the Packers’ scrutinized position group turnaround, and it’s a silver lining for the season
Green Bay allowed only two pressures against Tampa Bay, with two guards making their first starts for the team in a 17-14 win.
The Green Bay Packers offensive line finally showed signs of life in the 17-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4. The Packers did not have a great offensive performance by any means. Nonetheless, the offensive line did a good job in pass protection, even though it was partially because Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles decided not to blitz much.
According to preliminary numbers from PFF, the Packers offensive linemen gave up only two pressures. One was credited to left tackle Jordan Morgan and the other to center Sean Rhyan. That means right tackle Anthony Belton, right guard Travis Glover, and left guard Laken Tomlinson all had clean games with no pressures allowed.
And that’s particularly important for the two guards, because both made their first starts for Green Bay this season.
New faces at guard, even without Kevin Zeitler

Tomlinson is a veteran the Packers signed last weekend, after the loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3. He stepped right into the lineup and held his own. Glover’s path was a different experience. The third-year player had only a handful of NFL snaps, particularly rare at guard, and missed the entire 2025 season. Against Tampa Bay, he made his first regular season start and delivered a strong performance at right guard.
The expectation was that Kevin Zeitler would start at that spot. However, the Packers deactivated Zeitler for this game, and Glover started over Donovan Jennings. That decision paid off.
“It was great,” said quarterback Jordan Love. “I think the O-line did a great job in pass protection and the run game. Obviously, just keeping me clean and giving me some time. They did a great job, and you can definitely feel the difference back there.”
Why Kevin Zeitler didn’t play
The decision not to play Zeitler is intriguing. Green Bay signed him on Wednesday, and it looked like he could have a chance to contribute right away. But the coaching staff decided he wouldn’t be ready after just three practices.
There is a chance Zeitler could play against the Chicago Bears next week, but Packers head coach Matt LaFleur preferred not to get into specifics.
“The guy just got here this week,” LaFleur explained. “I think it wasn’t fair to him. We’ve got to ramp him up, give him a ramp-up period. That was our decision. We just have to get him acclimated with what we’re doing, and I think it would have been pretty unfair to put him in these conditions today with three practices under his belt.”
Glover posted an 82.0 pass-blocking grade, according to PFF’s preliminary numbers, and LaFleur praised him a lot.
“He’s made of the right stuff,” LaFleur added. “He’s got the right mentality. He goes out there and competes, and he’s just trying to get better each and every day. I know the game is important to him, and that’s what you need. You learn from every situation, but I thought we had to get a little bit bigger inside to help protect the quarterback a little bit better.”
The interesting aspect is the size change. Instead of Jacob Monk at right guard, the Packers had Glover, a 6-6 lineman with a big presence. That potentially explains why the protection looked so much better against the Buccaneers.
Clean pocket, sloppy offense
Love played in a pretty clean pocket, but the offense still had plenty of problems. Green Bay committed several penalties and lost some fumbles, and Love threw an interception late in the game. That’s why the Packers ended up scoring only 17 points. For the most part, though, Love was efficient. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 197 yards with two touchdown passes, one interception, and a 98.9 passer rating.
It wasn’t a pretty performance by the Packers. But the fact that the offensive line showed signs of life could have a big impact on the rest of the season for Green Bay, especially with Zeitler and potentially Mekhi Becton still waiting to join the mix.
