Packers News: Packers Confident Raji will play, Nelson game time decision

Packers News – The Packers are going to be without several players who missed last week’s win against the Rams, but defensive tackle B.J. Raji appears set to make his return to the lineup.
Raji is listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars after skipping the last two games with an ankle injury. Raji sat out practice on Friday after being able to work the rest of the week, but listening to coach Mike McCarthy makes it seem like that was a choice made in the interest of maintenance as opposed to any kind of setback with the injury.
“If nothing changes in the next 48 hours, I feel very confident in B.J. playing,” McCarthy said, via Paul Imig of FoxSportsWisconsin.com.
There’s less confidence about Jordy Nelson. Imig reports that the wide receiver will have to show he’s capable of playing during pregame warmups on Sunday, which is a slight difference from what the Packers said on Thursday. There was to be a test of Nelson’s readiness on Saturday in that scenario, although it is unclear if the decision time has been pushed back because of any change in Nelson’s condition since the last update.
Fullback John Kuhn, cornerback Sam Shields, linebacker Nick Perry and wide receiver Greg Jennings have all been ruled out. Shields, Perry and Jennings also missed last week’s game and Jennings will be out a while longer thanks to his decision to have surgery to repair an abdominal tear.

Jennings to Have Surgery, Nelson out with Hamstring Injury

Packers News – It’s a busy day of Packers wide receiver injury news.
Earlier Thursday, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said that surgery was an option to help Greg Jennings get back on the field after a protracted absence. Jennings announced Thursday that he will be having surgery next week and Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that Jennings anticipates being back in the locker room the day after the operation. Jennings also said that he regrets returning for Week Three after getting hurt in the season opener.
Nothing much to do about that now, especially when the Packers may have another man down at receiver this weekend. Jordy Nelson missed practice on Thursday after hurting his hamstring on Wednesday, a development that has prompted the team to preemptively rule him out for Friday’s practice as well. McCarthy said that Nelson would test his hamstring on Saturday to determine whether or no it was well enough for him to play against the Jaguars.
Nelson has 17 catches for 243 yards and four touchdowns in the last two weeks, so there would obviously be a lot of slack for James Jones, Randall Cobb, Donald Driver and Jarrett Boykin to pick up in Nelson’s absence. If there’s any question about Nelson’s health, the Packers would probably be wise to take their chances against Jacksonville without him in hopes of ensuring his health for the final eight games of the season.

Rodgers Razor Sharp – Packers News @ Event USA

Packers rip Rams to cap 2-1 road stretch

Green Bay Packers News – While the Green Bay Packers were putting the finishing touches on a 30-20 victory Sunday at St. Louis, their fans were treating the Edward Jones Dome as if it were Lambeau Field south.
Chants of “Go! Pack Go!” reverberated inside the dome while disappointed Rams fans filed out the exits.
“Our fans are unbelievable,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “To drive in from the airport (Saturday) and to see Packer fans everywhere, it was like walking down Oneida Street. … So, thank you fans, they were outstanding today.”
So were Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Casey Hayward and others as the Packers (4-3) completed a 2-1 road stretch with consecutive victories for the first time this season.
Rodgers was razor sharp against a Rams defense that had been tough on opposing quarterbacks this season. But that was against a collection of rookies and wannabes.
Defending the NFL’s reigning MVP was a different deal.
Rodgers extended plays with his legs and executed them with his arm. He connected on 20 of his first 22 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He finished 30 of 37 for 342 yards and three scores.
Against Houston’s and St. Louis’ well-regarded defenses, Rodgers completed 54 of 74 passes for 680 yards, nine touchdowns and zero interceptions.
“He’s going to make throws that others won’t,” Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis said.”
McCarthy lauded Rodgers’ play, but was quick to mention others.
“It is more than Aaron being dialed in,” he said.
Indeed, it was second-year pro Randall Cobb making big-time grabs. Rodgers targeted Cobb eight times, and the receiver hauled in each to finish with eight catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
Cobb’s acrobatic, end zone catch for a 39-yard touchdown put Green Bay up 27-13 and ended any Rams’ hopes for an upset.
It was difficult to decide which was more impressive: Cobb’s circus grab or Rodgers’ laser. The Packers’ QB was rolling to his left when he delivered the perfectly placed bullet.
Rodgers is enjoying the newest of his many weapons.
“He’s a star in the making,” Rodgers said. “He’s a big-time player. He has the right approach for being a professional. He takes his job very seriously. He sees the game through the eyes of a quarterback. He’s played quarterback before, but he asks the right questions. He wants to be on the same page with me.”
McCarthy also heaped praise on Cobb, a second-round pick who played quarterback at Kentucky.
“Randall is a unique player,” McCarthy said. “He can play the 1-2-3 spot in the wide receiver position and he can play out of the backfield. Obviously, we know what he can do as a returner. … He is a young, dynamic player.”
Another young, dynamic player is Hayward. The rookie cornerback celebrated his first NFL start by nabbing his fourth interception. Hayward’s ability to locate the football while maintaining contact with the receiver is exceptional. Furthermore, his soft hands and ball skills enable him to catch it once he gets his hands on it.
The defense also got strong play from Clay Matthews (of course), Erik Walden (again) and Dezman Moses (stepping up). Each finished with a sack of the Rams’ Sam Bradford, who had a disastrous day.
For Packers fans that traveled to St. Louis it was a terrific day.
Rodgers said: “The chants are incredible. The boos that we had today from our fans on one of those calls (against the Packers) was incredible. It was louder than the cheers for the Rams.”
Now, the Packers return home for a Sunday noon matchup against the depleted Jacksonville Jaguars, who lost quarterback Blaine Gabbert and running back Maurice Jones-Drew to injuries in a 26-23 overtime loss against the Oakland Raiders.
The Jaguars can expect to hear plenty of “Go! Pack Go!” chants on their way in and out of Lambeau Field. A Packers’ victory would put them at a respectable 5-3 at the season’s midpoint, leaving the disappointment of tough losses at Seattle and Indianapolis in their rear view mirror.
Last week’s prediction: Packers 35, Rams 10 (Packers 30-20)
This week’s prediction: Packers 34, Jaguars 6
Season: 4-3

Rodgers 'brilliant' in Packers win over Rams – Packers News @ PFT

Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers v St Louis Rams
Packers News – Aaron Rodgers is the reigning NFL MVP for a reason. In case you had forgotten during an up-and-down start to the Packers’ season, Rodgers is really, really good.
On the strength of another phenomenal game from Rodgers, the Packers went to St. Louis and beat the Rams on Sunday, improving to 4-3 and making a strong statement that they’ll have a lot to say about the shape of the NFC playoff race.
Aaron Rodgers & Jordy Nelson - Packers v. Rams 2012
Rodgers completed 30 of 37 passes for 342 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. After last week’s phenomenal game in Houston, Rodgers is now 54 of 74 for 680 yards, with nine touchdowns and no interceptions over the last two weeks.
This Packers team is better than its 4-3 record would indicate, and it’s not just Rodgers. Receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb both had big games, and the Packers’ defense was led once again by All-Pro linebacker Clay Matthews, who recorded another sack, his ninth of the season.
That’s not to say the Packers are perfect. They still need to find a way to run the ball more effectively (running back Alex Green was a non-factor), and they’ve been too inconsistent. But over the last two weeks, the Packers have been as impressive a team as there is in the NFL.
The loss drops the Rams’ record to 3-4, but St. Louis deserves a lot of credit for the way it’s playing in Jeff Fisher’s first season as head coach. This Rams team isn’t a lot more talented than last year’s 2-14 club, but this year’s team is playing a lot harder than last year’s team. Beating the Rams isn’t easy anymore.
But the Packers did beat the Rams, and they beat them in St. Louis, by a comfortable margin. That says a lot about this Packers team.

Packers News: Raji Back to Practice

Packers News – Quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘ calf was just fine after a day of limited participation, but his return to a full practice wasn’t the most significant news for the Packers on Thursday.
Rodgers being fully healthy is important, of course, but no one really expected him to miss this week’s game against the Rams. Defensive tackle B.J. Raji, on the other hand, was a major question mark after missing last week’s game and Wednesday’s practice because of an ankle injury.
Things are looking a little better on Thursday. Raji was able to practice, although Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that it might have been a “trial run” as Raji was working with the scout team during the portion of practice open to the media. It’s a step in the right direction for Raji in any case and keeps some hope alive that he’ll be able to return to the lineup for Week Seven.
Not so much hope for wide receiver Greg Jennings, linebacker Nick Perry or cornerback Sam Shields. All three of them missed a second straight day of practice and they’re headed for a spot on the inactive list without a rapid change in condition.
